The shelves are designed only for wine bottles. I had to buy a couple of pop can dispensers for the bottom, which then supported a flat shelf for storing beer bottles vertically. There is a 10F to 15F variation from top to bottom. when set on 41F the bottom measured 29F while the top measured 44F (the readout showed 45F). I inserted a fan in the bottom which gave the following results when set at 41F, the bottom ranged from 52F to 57F, the top stayed at 53F and the readout ranged from 40F to 44F. I am currently researching for a much smaller fan that will not add so much heat energy into the unit. If I had read this review before I bought it , I wouldn't have bought it for a beverage cooler. It probably would be ok for wine.
